Abstract

|
Propose: The current study is designed to analyze the survival rate and prognostic factors of chondrosarcoma of the extremities and axial bones.
Materials and Methods: We examined the survival rate, local recurrence and distant metastasis of the 48 choncrosarcoma patients, who were treated surgically from January 1982 to March 1999 and wee followed up more than 18 months, according to several prognostic factors; anatomical location, tumor size, histologic grade and surgical resection margin.
Results: The overall survival was 73%(95% confidence interval: 73±1.72%). The local recurrences were in 15 cases(31.3%), and the distant metastases in 8 cases(16.7%). The anatomical location, size of tumor and surgical resection margin showed significant correlations with local recurrence of tumor.
Conclusion: The prognosis of chondrosarcoma of extremities and axial bones is related with anatomical site, size of tumor, pathologic grade and surgical resection margin.
